RANGERS’ FRENCH international goalkeeper, Lionel Charbonnier, will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury sustained in his club’s Uefa Cup triumph. Tests have revealed Charbonnier tore a cruciate ligament when his studs caught in the turf during the second round triumph over Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday.
Charbonnier, who joined Rangers from French club Auxerre for pounds 1.2m in July, will undergo surgery and then face eight months on the sidelines.”I am so disappointed by this,” he said “I came to Rangers to win things and now I can’t. The striker was sent off during the 2-2 draw at Dundee United, for a second bookable offence.Davies said: “The ordering off looked a bit soft to me, but in fairness to the referee who was close to the incident I will look at the evidence before making any decision.”He was delighted by his side’s performance after being reduced to 10 men for 53 minutes of the match.. I will give Celtic unrelenting support.”McCann dismissed suggestions that a possible fall in the club’s value before his own departure in March was a factor in Brown’s resignation. However, he admitted that the increasingly irate Parkhead support, plus the criticism of Brown’s activities in the general manager’s role, had proved instrumental in his downfall.Eoin Jess is aiming to rescue Aberdeen’s season and his own international career. The 27-year-old midfielder scored both goals in the 2-1 win over Dunfermline to give the club its first victory in three months.”It has been disappointing not to be named for the Scotland squad, but the boss had a word with me, and I am working extremely hard, especially off the ball,” Jess said. The defeat leaves Dunfermline at the foot of the table after just one victory in 13 games.Motherwell’s new manager, Billy Davies, will take his time before deciding whether to take any disciplinary action against Lee McCullough.
It has been a terrific experience for me and a learning curve. Mistakes have been made and lessons learned.”But the lawyer and former television commentator said: “The fans should continue to give the club massive support for, after all, they have made this great club what it is. The Scottish champions announced Brown had resigned only 16 months into the job. The implication in a Celtic statement was that Brown’s hand had been forced by managing director Fergus McCann and the board Brown said: “My resignation was the correct one. It was set in circumstances of amicability, with no aggravation.
I indicated that it was time to resign, simply because of the circumstances surrounding the club.
“Of course I have regrets, possibly the greatest being the way I handled the media But I don’t want to go into that in detail. JOCK BROWN insisted yesterday that his departure as Celtic’s general manager was an amicable one and that he will remain a staunch supporter of the club. He was also in no doubt about how he would have handled Van Hooijdonk (as it happens, your archetypal Wimbledon player – big and strong), recalling how he had moved on John Fashanu when he became too big for his boots. But then Fashanu, unlike Van Hooijdonk, had lost his effectiveness – and Wimbledon, unlike Forest, were not staring at relegation.Goal: Gayle (23) 0-1.Nottingham Forest (4-4-2): Beasant; Lyttle (Bonalair, 73), Chettle, Armstrong, Rogers; Stone, Bart-Williams, Gemmill, Gray; Harewood (Freedman, 84), Van Hooijdonk.
Van Hooijdonk has good skill for a big man and if he was not at the end of most of Forest’s better movements he was often playing a useful linking role before a combination of lack of fitness and match practice saw his contribution dwindle. The win, deservedly earned with another Marcus Gayle header, was almost as welcome to Wimbledon as it would have been to Forest, the Dons having gone five games without one, and their manager, Joe Kinnear, took pleasure in noting that they now had Liverpool and other “household names” behind them in the table. And with his very first effort in a Forest shirt in six months he very nearly scored, anticipating, but miskicking Marlon Harewood’s cross to the near post.It was not long, though, before he was bringing his physical presence to bear, which takes some doing against a team like Wimbledon. “I must admit that Pierre has amazed me by having the audacity to not even apologise to anyone at the football club”, he wrote in the programme. “He has shown no remorse whatsoever for his behaviour, which is regrettable to say the very least.”As the teams were read out, the name of Van Hooijdonk, whom Bassett agreed had played “quite well’, was greeted with boos and cheers in equal measure, which must have been encouraging for him.
